Tuesday, Nov. 2 is Detroit’s general election. One of the proposals voters will decide on is Proposal E.
Proposal E “would decriminalize to the fullest extent permitted under Michigan law the personal possession and therapeutic use of Entheogenic Plants by adults and make the personal possession and therapeutic use of Entheogenic Plants by adults the city’s lowest law-enforcement priority.”
“Entheogenic” plants and substances include psilocybin mushrooms, peyote, ayahuasca, and iboga.
Last year, Ann Arbor’s City Council unanimously voted to decriminalize entheogenic plants and mushrooms, noting their possible effectiveness in treating mental health disorders and the fact that they have been used by cultures for medicinal and ceremonial purposes for thousands of years.
Other cities including Denver, Colorado, and Oakland, California, have also moved to decriminalize entheogenic substances.
