Over-Arrest... Thoughts on Reboots

Maybe the band Foreigner misled you... Maybe nothing can feel like the first time.

I mean, - George Lucas gave us Episode I ...Spielberg tried to coax us into the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull... Greg Ginn got Black Flag back in the van... and... *gulp*... Mitchell Hurwitz ambitiously resurrected Arrested Development...

Some, like this writer, keep convincing, cajoling, deluding themselves into believe "...it's still good..."

But maybe it isn't? Maybe the chorus of "Meh..." might be onto something?  Maybe the lesson J.J. Abrams (by way of the Nu-Star-Trek) has taught us - Don't reboot your own franchise... I think it only amplifies the underwhelming-ness of it all. I mean, even so... I can see some throwing the barb of "Meh" at the very-latest Star Trek, but you gotta give it to him, for that initial '09 reboot. It worked. For whatever reason. But I think when you're original author, the guy who gave you that thing that you love so very much (...and oh, hallowed Hurwitz, I doth loved thine initial 3 Seasons so very much...) when he screws it up, it hurts more.

It's something akin to that crestfallen, heart-broken, wide-eyed wonder, the how-could-this-be...or the  "Say it ain't so, Joe..." reaction.

We feel wronged on a different level. It's like your star player on your favorite team shaving points or tossing the game on purpose -vs.- an outside element, like a referee or an umpire, blowing a call and costing you the game. You can still root for your favored artist because his beautiful work has been wronged by this alien auteur who mangled it and dumped it down a different road. But the weirder, harder to place feeling of disappointment, is in knowing that this is apparently what the "authority" of the art intended. It's certified, apparently...

But at the same time, did we really need another Indiana Jones? I still believe we needed more Arrested Development. But then...

There's something to be said for the preciousness of burning out before awkwardly fading away.

C'mon.

(...I still believe... I think...)
