Detroit’s Robert Jones is a busy man. Husband. Father. He hosts the spiritual and gospel show “Deep River” on WDET on Sundays, 1-3 p.m. He’s been on and off over 20 years. He’s a multi-instrumental blues musician and blues educator. He was just awarded the Blues Foundation 2007 Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Education. Jones has been teaching, lecturing and performing the blues for more than 15 years in universities and public schools throughout the country.

He’s also been the pastor at Detroit’s Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church at Chene and Superior for more than three years now (Jones has been at the church for 30-plus years.) Needless to say, the music at the Sunday morning service is amazing. His wife Bernice and his son Robert Jr. help the Rev. McGee direct the Sweet Kingdom Mass Choir, which also features Deacon Nate Monroe on piano, Bobby Thomas on organ and Terry DeShields on drums. It’s a small church with a huge heart and sound. “It’s a very intimate family church” Pastor Jones says. “We all know each other, love each other and care about each other here.”
