Michigan Central Station has a new owner, but we don't yet know who it is

Detroit's long-decrepit Michigan Central Station is now one step closer to... whatever the next chapter in its next life will be, although exactly what that is remains to be revealed.

Crain's Detroit Business reported this morning that owners the Moroun family quietly transferred ownership of MCS to a mysterious company known as "New Investment Properties I LLC" last week. At the same time, the Morouns also transferred the ownership of a former Detroit Public Schools book depository building located nearby to another company called "New Investment Properties II LLC." Both mystery companies were incorporated earlier this year.

Previously, Crain's reported that Ford Motor Company was in talks to purchase the hulking slab of ruin porn, but the company has so far played it cool, refusing to either confirm nor deny the news and to just say they are excited to "grow our presence in Detroit and will share more details in the future." They remain tight-lipped. Of course, it isn't far-fetched: Ford began moving more than 200 employees in its autonomous and electric vehicle division into a nearby office space on Michigan Avenue last week.

Crain's reporter Chad Livengood, who broke the news, tweeted that since he was not able to join the rest of Detroit's media, leaders, and elite up at the Grand Hotel to cover the Mackinac Policy Conference, he decided to instead pay a visit to the Wayne County Register of Deeds office. So Detroit media, take note — maybe we don't need to be sending so many reporters up there! Just saying!
