News Hits is sensing panic at the Detroit News, at least among the editorial page staff. On the front page last week — above the fold — the Bush-backing paper ran an editorial demanding that Vice President Al Gore call off legal challenges to the Florida election results. The Detroit News claims that if Gore does ask for a new election in one county (to make sure 20,000 or so people get their votes counted) he could “set the United States on the road to a constitutional crisis.”
Ignoring the fact that, so far, it is only voters themselves who are petitioning the courts for help, News Hits would like to know how using the courts to ensure an accurate vote creates a constitutional crisis?
The Detroit News, by the way, assured readers that its previous endorsement of Dubya for president had nothing to do with the paper begging Gore to refrain from taking legal action.
News Hits made a point to look Monday morning, but unless we missed it, there was no editorial — front page or otherwise — entreating the Bushman to halt his court action seeking to stop an entirely legal recount.
In light of that fact, News Hits offers this two-word editorial on the subject: Sniveling Hypocrites!
Exercising one’s legal right is not the “desperate act” the News accused Gore of; running a logically twisted, completely partisan front-page editorial disguised as concern for our country sure is.
