A new dining option has officially arrived in Detroit’s Boston-Edison neighborhood.

The Rectory, a new pizza restaurant, is set to open Tuesday, Sept. 30. It’s located at 1920 Atkinson St., next door to the church-turned-cafe The Congregation. (Yes, the space is the church’s former rectory.)

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. followed by music from DJ Radical Me.

“Bringing this building back to life felt like the natural next step,” The Congregation co-founder Betsy Murdoch said in a statement. “We kept hearing from our neighbors that they wanted more food options nearby, more places that felt like an extension of home. The Rectory is just that.”

According to the owners, the building was vacant for more than 50 years. The Congregation opened in 2020.

The Rectory features hand-tossed pies made from locally sourced ingredients, fresh salads, vegan and gluten-free items, and a beverage menu including non-alcoholic options.

The building also includes indoor dining, a three-season deck, a walk-up carry-out window, and a private event space.

Murdoch is joined in the effort by business partners Antonio Luck, Mark Mondary, and Amy Peterson, who all reside in the neighborhood.

“What sets The Rectory apart is more than the menu, it’s the soul of the space,” the owners said in a statement. “The home has been carefully restored to preserve its original character, from historic windows, handcrafted furnishings and unique stained-glass windows.”

They add, “Where there was once blight, there’s now life, music, and handmade pizza.”
