After a little more than two years in business, Ferndale’s Coeur is shutting down later this month.
In a Facebook post published Wednesday, the acclaimed New American eatery cited rising prices, writing:
When we opened Coeur, we had noble ideals: to cook with the best products, to pay our team fairly, and to create a truly special dining experience here in Ferndale that was welcoming to all.
However, the reality of this economic climate is less than ideal. Simply put: We can’t keep to our mission without raising prices beyond what makes sense for our guests. So after a lot of painful reflection, we’ve made the tough decision to close Coeur.
Our last service will be Sunday, October 19.
Until then, we’d love to see you one more time — for a tasting menu, a happy hour smashburger, or just to share a final night together in this place we care so deeply for.
Thank you for all the memories, Ferndale. We’ll miss you.
— Chef Jordan Smith & the Coeur team
When Coer opened in 2023 in the former Assaggi Bistro space downtown at 330 W. Nine Mile Rd., Smith — a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who has worked in fine dining restaurants in Toronto, New York, San Francisco, and Arizona — said he was drawn to the Detroit dining scene and aimed to create an elevated experience that was also laid back.
“The concept for Coeur is rooted in tradition but light-hearted in attitude,” Smith said in a statement at the time. “We set out to create a neighborhood restaurant where guests could enjoy delicious elevated cuisine and exciting experiences without all the fuss.”With a seasonal menu, Coeur quickly earned kudos from Metro Times readers, nabbing the accolade for Oakland County’s Best New Restaurant in our Best of Detroit poll. In her review, Metro Times contributor Jane Slaughter heaped praise but noted the high prices.
