Michigan Lavender Festival

While this fragrant purple flower is not native to Michigan, the state is becoming increasingly known for its lavender farms — and the Michigan Lavender Festival is a great way to learn more about them. Billed as the largest and oldest lavender festival on the East Coast, now in its 23rd year, the event features vendors, artisan workshops, and food trucks … not to mention ice-cold Lavender Lemonade.

From noon-6 p.m. on Friday, June 6 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 at Eastern Michigan State Fairgrounds; 195 Midway St., Imlay City; themichiganlavenderfestival.com. Tickets are $10; children 12 and under get in free.

Motor City Pride

Michigan’s largest pride celebration draws tens of thousands of attendees to Hart Plaza each year over the course of two days, with a parade on Sunday, June 8 starting at noon near Fort and Griswold Streets.

From 1-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, and 12:30-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 8 in Hart Plaza; motorcitypride.org. Cover is $5 for the festival each day.

New Center Walking Tour

Detroit’s New Center area features some of the best examples of the work of industrial architect Albert Kahn, especially the grand Art Deco Fisher Building (which, if you can believe it, was originally intended to be the smaller of a proposed three-tower complex before it was scaled down due to the Great Depression). This walking tour includes stops at the Albert Kahn Building, General Motors Building, Argonaut Building, Old Kahn Parking Garage, and more.

Bloc Party with Blonde Redhead

U.K. post-punk act Bloc Party is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its 2005 debut Silent Alarm by playing the album in its entirety, along with its other greatest hits. New York’s Blonde Redhead is set to open.

Doors at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 at the Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit; ticketmaster.com. Tickets start at $38.

Paddlepalooza

This kayaking and canoeing event offers an opportunity to race an eight-mile stretch of the Clinton River for prizes. While it’s open to ages 12 and over, organizers say it is not for beginners and under 18 requires accompaniment by an adult.
