Listen, no one looks cute eating sushi, but that’s part of the experience — along with dropping a loaded piece of Volcano roll messily into the perfect mix of soy sauce and eye-watering wasabi before unlocking your jaw to make sure every delicious bit of sauce and crunchy stove makes it in one bite. Though Michigan is not a sushi hotspot (we’re more into freshwater, ya dig?), we know our sushi and like most things, everyone has a favorite spot that they want to scream it from the mountain tops about because metro Detroiters have a way of letting their feelings be known. Well, thankfully Yelp! is here to help guide our indecisive stomachs with the colorful experiences of those who lived — and ate — to tell the tale. These are the best places for sushi takeout, according to Yelp! users. (Oh, and no, we have no friggin’ idea as to how Noble Fish failed to crack the top 25, but… maybe we’ll Yelp! about it.)

Coming from someone who grew up in Japan, great sushi. I particularly liked the sashimi and nigiri, highly recommend. Try the tamago sashimi! It’s a traditional japanese sweet flavored mini-omlete. My boyfriend and I ordered two drinks, 4 rolls of sushi, and the fried gyoza. The bartender was so nice and informative and really helped us since it was our first time. The sushi arrived so fast it was unreal. We got all four rolls on a Saturday night, in I kid you not, 10 minutes! The gyoza came shortly after. All of which were so yummy! My favorite was the dragon roll. The sushi was fresh and the service was great! I would say the price is a little expensive but that’s what you would expect from a sushi place. True to my nature I ordered sushi. The service was great and the food was reasonably priced (especially for it to be in Grosse Pointe) and awesome. My hand roll was huge filled with a TON of tuna. My nigiri was a nice size too. I was actually shocked. The Shrimp California was also very good. I tend to stick to the raw sushi but wanted to try something I never had. Overall this place was awesome and I definitely will be coming back!” —Stephen N. on Yelp Photo via TN Thai Bistro/Facebook

We came in at a very cold, rainy night and although it was chilly inside the miso soup sure warms you right up! We only ordered sushi but you get complimentary soup and salad. That’s what draws me in. I can get the best of everything for such a great price. Our server has been the same both times and she is really, really great!! She is prompt, courteous, and great at giving advice. If you are ever nervous to ask about what to get with certain things you like, this is a great starter place. She can give THE best advice on what to order!! She brings it, checks on you to make sure it’s exactly what you wanted.. fantastic in my book!! When you sit down, they have electronic menus, basically just an iPad/tablet as a menu. It was nice because there are a bunch of different sushi rolls and if you click on the name of the roll, it pops up with a picture of the roll along with the price. It was a nice touch. We started off with the Spiral Avocado with tuna and it was amazing. Great way to start your meal. We then ordered and I went with the Sushi tower which for $10 is well worth every penny. It was delicious! I also split a Lion King roll which was just so flavorful and can’t wait to have it again. You can’t go wrong with whatever specialty roll you order there. The played design of the sushi is even a nice touch. Can’t wait to try more!” —Kari S. on Yelp Photo via Xushi Ko/Facebook
15. Koi Nu Asian 17043 Kercheval Ave., Grosse Pointe; 313-922-4760; koinuasian.com “We REALLY enjoy Koi Nu Asian! We’ve been fans of another Asian restaurant on Mack Avenue (AND STILL ARE!), which is a bit more upscale than this, but there is room enough in our rotation AND in the Pointes for BOTH!! My wife and daughter are crazy about the bao buns. They traveled to Tai Wan last year, and swear these are as authentic and delicious as what they had there. The shrimp tempura appetizer is also among the best I’ve ever had. I wish they offered them as an entree! Gyoza and crab rangoon are also top-notch. Daughter loves their rolls, and I enjoy them as well. The Asian pear salad is soooo light and refreshing you almost want to drink it! All of their noodle dishes hit the mark as well. I’ve eaten lunch inside with a friend a few times (pre-pandemic) and the servers have both been delightful. Since staying at home, we try to support local small businesses like Koi Nu Asian on Takeout Tuesday as well as Friday evenings, too. We rotate here more and more frequently!!” —Steve K. on Yelp Photo via Koi Nu Asian/Facebook

(Not going to lie, I’m a little jealous of her for being so close to it.) Great service and fresh fish, and super great prices on all the sushi. I love looking at their fish tank when I’m there – so aesthetic, honestly. The lunch special is an excellent deal, and I strongly recommend that if you’re on a budget. Last time I got the Dancing Eel roll (crab meat and avocado inside, wrapped in eel, with eel sauce – can you tell I have a favorite food yet) and a california roll. I have some seafood allergies and they were super accommodating and nice about it.” —Jessica K. on Yelp Photo via Google Maps

Fish is always fresh, nigiri always has thick slices and the baked rolls are amazing! Prices are very reasonable for what you get. Only thing that I can see some ppl not liking is the amount of sauce on some rolls or the wait time. But hey that’s nothing a little request can’t fix or a call ahead to save time. Lee works alone so it might be a bit of a wait, but definitely worth it and it’s such a nice feeling knowing sushi will be consistently made each time by the chef that came up with the rolls!” —Lisa K. on Yelp Photo via Crazy Sushi of Madison Heights/Facebook

A little on the pricey side, but the flavor, variety and presentation topped with the rustic open atmosphere makes it one of the best sushi experiences Detroit has to offer! We started off with the firecracker shrimp appetizer. Large pieces of tempura shrimp dipped and prepared in a orange garlic chili sauce on top of the crunch flakes with leaves of lettuce. You get about six-eight pieces! I always end up getting the sexy bacon and it is delicious! Bacon and sushi? What could be better! Wasabi, garlic paste, and wrapped in soy paper. 2. Tai Fai Restaurant 8505 W. Nine Mile Rd., Oak Park; 248-336-9622; taifairestaurant.com “Utterly scrumptious!Tai Fai has become my favorite sushi take out spot. The location is carry out only and sits on the corner of a strip of stores. It’s super convenient because this area of 9 Mile is more residential and not nearly as populated as it is just a half-mile up the road. There is plenty of parking in the adjacent lot. Service is fast and courteous. The menu is extensive with soups, lettuce wraps, crab wontons, tempura green beans, seaweed salad, spring rolls and my favorite…sushi…lots of sushi! I’ve had the regular California roll and the spicy tuna roll. However, I really enjoy the more complex specialty rolls. The Yam Yam roll – salmon, tuna, avocado, cucumber & cream cheese is a deep fried tempura treat.Another goodie is the Spider roll with soft shell crab cucumber, cream cheese, avocado, mayo and sweet sauce. However my favorite thing on the menu is the Baked Avocado, a dreamy combination. They take an avocado and stuff it with crab and cream cheese, it’s topped with sweet sauce and crunchies then baked. So yummy! I could eat here weekly. I actually have for the past couple of weeks. I will likely have it again today.I highly recommend it.” —Karol C. on Yelp Photo via Tai Fai Restaurant/Facebook
