Dearborn is one of our favorite places in metro Detroit. It has one of the largest Arab American communities in the U.S. and is home to the country’s only museum dedicated to Arab American culture. It’s also loaded with the best authentic Arabic restaurants around, but it’s really the city’s coffee shops that shouldn’t be slept on. Whether you want a bitter Turkish coffee, Yemeni coffee brewed with spices like cardamom and ginger, or a pistachio latte, you’ll find it at these Dearborn coffee shops and cafes.
Haraz Coffee House
13810 Michigan Ave., Dearborn; harazcoffeehouse.com
This family-owned Yemeni coffee shop has locations in Detroit, Warren, Louisville, and beyond (with more coming), but it all started in Dearborn. Their coffee beans are sourced from the Haraz Mountains on Yemen’s lower west coast. The Adeni Chai, with its strong-brewed black tea, cream, and spices, is not for the weak. 25245 Ford Rd., Suite B, Dearborn; qamariacoffee.com
Qamaria serves a mean pistachio latte and other Yemeni coffee faves like Mufawaar, a medium roast with cardamom and cream. Pair it with a honeycomb bun or rose milk cake. Credit:Instagram, @qamariacoffeeBlack Box Coffee and Art
1034 Monroe St., Dearborn; blackboxdearborn.com
This is a stand-up coffee shop and art gallery serving cappuccino, affogato, lavender lattes, and fresh pastries. They also have a walk-up window if you’re in a hurry or want to take your drink with you on a downtown stroll. The shop hosts events like plant swaps, open mic nights, and small business pop-ups, too. Credit:Facebook, Black BoxQahwah House
6655 Schaefer Rd., Dearborn | 22000 Michigan Ave., Dearborn | qahwahhouse.com
Qahwah House is another popular Yemeni coffee shop with multiple locations, but we like the downtown Dearborn spot on Michigan Avenue for its chill outdoor patio. Like many other Yemeni coffee shops in Dearborn, it’s open late — until 11 p.m. daily, except for Saturdays, when it’s open until midnight — and the patio is always packed. 5125 Schaefer Rd., Dearborn
Diwan Cafe serves up smoothies, fresh juices, Turkish coffee, Yemeni tea, and drinks like the Kahwa Rada’yi Mulflaf, which combines light roast coffee, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, sesame seeds, raisins, peanuts, almonds, cashews, and barley. The only thing that upstages its drinks and sweets is its ornate red decor. Credit:Instagram, @diwancafe.usThe Flower Shop Detroit/The Coffee Shop Detroit
22722 Ford Rd., Dearborn Heights; instagram.com/flowershopdetroit
A flower shop that serves coffee? Why not? This shop serves lattes with floral names like the Black Dahlia with mocha and white chocolate, or the Pink Poppy latte with strawberry puree and vanilla. They serve regular coffee too, but seating is limited so it’s more of a “grab a bouquet with a latte to go” rather than a “sit down for a few hours with your laptop” kind of place. 20219 Carlysle St., Suite D, Dearborn; instagram.com/dellahcoffeeandbrunchhouse
In addition to fragrant Yemeni coffee, Dellah serves an array of brunch options. The menu is full of both Yemeni and typical American fare like shakshuka, omelets, chicken and waffles, biscoff pancakes, burgers, foul, wings, and fattah with dates. 1006 S. Military St., Dearborn; gateauxpatisserie.com
This bakery and coffee shop is heaven (or maybe hell) for people with a sweet tooth. Gateaux Patisserie offers macaroons, croissants, cookies, pistachio-topped ice cream, and even customized buttercream cakes. For drinks, they serve lavender honey matcha, lattes, affogato, and beyond. During September, or “witches and wizards month,” they roll out a Harry Potter-themed menu that includes a butterbeer-inspired frappuccino. 22370 Michigan Ave., Dearborn; instagram.com/mochidoughdearborn
This cafe combining Bober Tea and Mochi Dough was practically made for Instagram, from the pink-covered walls to the flowers hanging from the ceiling. The shop specializes in boba milk tea and soft Japanese mochi-style doughnuts in rotating flavors like black sesame, taro, and churro. They also serve a variety of lattes, Vietnamese coffee, fruit teas, and plain old Americano. Credit:Instagram, @mochidoughdearbornShibam Coffee
12720 Prospect St., Dearborn; shibamcoffee.com
Shibam Coffee is located inside wholesale supermarket Maza Foods, away from the busy streets of downtown Dearborn — and perfect for when you need a quiet place to relax. You can grab a Shibam latte with Yemeni spices, a steamed ginger milk, or jubani brewed with coffee beans and husks plus cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon. Credit:Instagram, @shibamcoffeeMokaccino Cafe
13348 Michigan Ave., Dearborn; mokaccinocafe.com
This coffee shop serves mojito mocktails, smoothies, acai bowls, and crepes, alongside affogato, lattes, and coffee with beans sourced from Italy. They even have a boba bar where you can customize your own milk tea or fruit tea. Credit:Facebook, Mokaccino Café USGalata Sweets
1035 Mason St., Suite 102, Dearborn; galatasweetsusa.com
Galata Sweets offer expertly crafted Turkish coffee called kahvesi with flavors like hazelnut and pistachio. For something cool and refreshing, try the ayran made with frothed yogurt and sea salt. Turkish breakfast dishes like manti lamb dumplings, labneh, and assorted baklava are also on the menu. Credit:Facebook, GalataSweetsusaBon Divan
22048 Michigan Ave., Suite 2, Dearborn; instagram.com/bondivan
You’ll find Bon Divan nestled inside Sheeba Restaurant West, though the luxurious cafe is its own separate experience with nearly floor-to-ceiling windows and a patio. It serves up lattes, Yemeni coffee, pistachio croissants, pistachio cakes, macarons, tarts, and more. Credit:Instagram, @bondivan_Wow Juice+
6540 Schaefer Rd., Dearborn; orderwowjuice.com
Appealing to the slightly health-conscious crowd, this quaint cafe’s focus is more on smoothies and fresh juices, which they offer alongside Yemeni-style coffee, Turkish coffee, frappuccinos, and lattes. Credit:Facebook, WOW Juice & CoffeeFinjan Cafe
28251 Ford Rd., Garden City; instagram.com/finjancafe1
Finjan Cafe is technically on the border of Dearborn Heights and Garden City, but when we want a lowkey place to get some work done on a fast-approaching deadline, this is our spot. It serves many of the same Yemeni coffee faves and desserts as the more popular shops, but isn’t nearly as crowded. We can always count on their Qishir, a barely caffeinated drink made from coffee husks with ginger and cardamom. Credit:Instagram, @finjancafe1
