24 years ago in Metro Times: Cal Burnett's cover story tackles the new wave of syndicated cartoons from some of the best up-and-coming artists, including Bill Griffith, Lynda Barry, Nicole Hollander, P.S. Mueller, Mark Alan Stamaty and the creator of a tiny rabbit "Binky" from Life in Hell, artist Matt Groening. All of these cartoonists are still currently working in some form, including Groening, of course, who'd go on to start The Simpsons, which recently finished its 21st season. What was happening: Anthrax at Harpo's, Red Hot Chili Peppers at Clutch Cargo's, and Robert Palmer was simply irresistible at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
14 years ago in Metro Times: Patrick Daugherty talks NCAA tourney as Syracuse, UMass, Mississippi State and Kentucky enter the final four. This year, two of those four are still highly favored No. 1 seeds (Syracuse and Kentucky) in their respective regions. Jim Boeheim, who Daugherty proclaims "No. 1 Whiner" is still at Syracuse. This year's bracket found two Michigan teams in the hunt, with Michigan State placed at a No. 5 seed and Oakland University a No. 14. What was happening: War at the Magic Bag, Frank Black at St. Andrews and Foo Fighters at the State Theatre (now the Fillmore).
10 years ago in Metro Times: "Project Censored" investigates stories that were ignored or marginalized by mainstream media: "The problem isn't a simple conspiracy, but something much more complex than that." Most commonly it was not overt censorship but a mix of "waning resources for investigative reporters, dwindling foreign coverage, newsroom laziness and self-censorship to avoid 'making waves.'" Among the stories was the headline "U.S. Plans to Put Weapons in Space, Violating International Law." What was happening: John Scofield at Clutch Cargo's, Wyclef Jean at Hill Auditorium and the Detroit Vipers, our minor league pro ice hockey team, played their final home game at the Palace.
