21 things Detroiters are irrationally obsessed with

Detroiters are a unique people. We'll defend the city till we die, and pay $30 for a T-shirt to show it. We love anything with a little history, but vintage Vernors signs might as well be crack cocaine. Then again, if you claim to be from Detroit when you live in Grosse Pointe Park and we'll never forgive you.

Detroit T-Shirts
We have no problem shelling out $30-plus on T-shirts and hoodies so everyone can know how hard Detroit hustles. What can we say — we love representing our city!

Tigers Opening Day
Ah, Opening Day in Detroit: It's like a spring mating ritual that always ends in public drunkenness, urination, and obscene amounts of liter. Oh, and there's a baseball game too.

Eminem
Whether it's a screening of his semi-autobiographical flick 8 Mile
or a "Mom's Spaghetti" pop-up at the Shelter, we'll pretty much do anything if it involves Eminem.

Arguing over how "Detroit" you are
Whether you’re from Sterling Heights or Canton, people are always trying to claim the city — but only the pretty parts.

Detroit memorabilia
Lions and Tigers and coney dogs, oh my! There’s no shortage of iconic artwork that can be slapped onto a mug, T-shirt, bracelet, coaster, blanket — you get the picture. We love memorabilia as much as we love supporting the local businesses that make the handmade trinkets.

Bell’s Oberon
Each spring, Oberon's released day is celebrated like an unofficial holiday.
We wait outside of our favorite bars and liquor stores, itching to down our first pint of the season. We plaster our laptops and water bottles with those colorful stickers to make sure everyone knows we drink local.

Craft cocktails
We like our cocktails strong, with a witty name to boot. Who cares if they cost us half of a paycheck?

Brunch
Many of us have a hard time getting our lives together before noon on the weekend, but that doesn’t mean we’re not craving breakfast. On the weekends we like to sleep in and roll out to our favorite brunch spots for Bloody Mary’s, eggs Benedict, French toast, and more Bloody Mary’s. Hair of the dog that bit ya, right?

Defending Detroit to outsiders
Forget everything you know about Detroit, because it’s all wrong. Well, some of the rumors are accurate, but we’ll die before we let an outsider speak badly about Detroit. The city is making a strong comeback — there’s a Lululemon on Woodward Avenue for pete's sake.

Paczki Day
Other cities simply refer to this Christian-adjacent holiday as "Fat Tuesday." But, Detroiters use the day before Ash Wednesday as an excuse to stuff our faces with those calorie-packed Polish delicacies known as Paczki.
