20 Michigan-based restaurant chains that are actually good

Michigan sometimes feels inundated with chain restaurants, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Not all chains are bad, and some locally based ones are definitely worth your time. Here are a few of our favorite Michigan-based chains.

 Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern 
At Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern, beers and burgers are a way of life. Established in 2008 by University of Dayton graduate, Michael Ansley, the tavern is notable for its serving of distinctive burgers, Belgian-style hand-cut fries and local American craft beers. Bagger’s have expanded throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.

A 60-year-old family-owned franchise located in Livonia and Farmington Hills, Bate’s Burgers puts a classic spin on diner food. The menu ranges from a selection of crispy and chili cheese fries, cheeseburger sliders, and the original burger itself.

bd’s Mongolian Grill
In 1992 Billy Down’s — the “bd” part of the restaurant's name — opened the first location in Royal Oak. Bd’s Mongolian Grill now has 30 restaurants nation-wide and one in Mongolia. Dining at bd’s is interactive, as customers fill their bowl with what they would like to be cooked by the restaurants grillers on a large circle grill.

Its core product of interest is the “Big Boy Hamburger,”the original double deck hamburger. In addition, the menu contains delicious ice cream treats, milkshakes, sandwiches, and soups and salads.

Bob Fish and Michael McCall partnered up with the intention of bringing people together with coffee. Biggby Coffee offers a slew of hot and cold coffee-infused beverages, in addition to the friendly service. There are currently over 200 locations within eight states.

Buddy’s Pizza
What started as a speakeasy in the '30s eventually turned into the birthplace of the Detroit-style pizza Michiganders love today. The original was baked in a blue steel pan donated from various automotive plants in the area — can’t get much more Detroit than that. There are currently 14 Buddy’s restaurants in the metro Detroit area, with two new locations planned for Detroit and Woodhaven.
