Of all of the characters committed to celluloid, perhaps no one represents Detroit more fittingly than murdered Motor City cop Alex Murphy and his superhuman android second-life as RoboCop. The 1987 sci-fi classic tackled everything from gentrification to dystopia and is as relevant now as ever. (Don’t bother with the 2014 remake.)
The film kicks off two days of speaking panels on the subject of “The Crisis of Beauty,” presented by Culture Lab Detroit. In fact, Peter Weller, art historian and lead actor of RoboCop, will be in attendance on Thursday’s event, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Senate Theater.
