Minimalist streetwear boutique Urban Angelo opens in Brush Park

Detroit is welcoming another store to its burgeoning streetwear scene.

Urban Angelo, a brick and mortar location at 90 Erskine Street within The Scott at Brush Park apartment complex, opened its doors on Sunday.

The new retail location is the streetwear extension of its sister-store, the clothing boutique Bird Bee, said owner and local entrepreneur Taylor Bolleber.

"There's a lot of streetwear brands that are popping up in Detroit, but there's nothing that's locally curated, so this is super different," said Bolleber.

Though Urban Angelo was conceived as a menswear store last year, it has since added women's clothing and rebranded with a monochromatic look and feel.

"It's more artful and specially curated than it was before," said Bolleber.

Urban Angelo, which has designed its store in a black, gray and white color scheme, prides itself on its minimalism.

"We want people to be investing in long-lasting good quality garments stuff that you can wear over and over again - simple effortless pieces," said Bolleber. "Instead of buying a million different cheap t-shirts, we want you to invest in one nice one that you are going to wear over and over again."

The store has its own clothing line and some local brands, but is planning to add more in the near future. There are also clothing labels from far-away places like Australia.

"I don't want the city to be taken over by brands that exist everywhere else that you can find at the mall," said Bolleber.

"I want Bird Bee and Urban Angelo to be two authentic stores that you can't find anywhere else."
