They say dogs are man’s best friend. If you’ve ever owned a pet, or cried your eyes out watching Marley & Me, then you know the pure joy having a furry friend can bring. Unfortunately, many dogs are abandoned every day, some sent to shelters for a variety of reasons.
At the Detroit Animal Care and Control, there are constantly new pets being left in the shelter’s care. All wanting new forever homes. We’ve partnered with DACC to share some of their current adoptable pets.
All photos and captions provided by Detroit Animal Care and Control.
To inquire about any of the pets featured please email the animal’s name and ID number to adopt@friendsofdacc.org. To see all dogs available for adoption at DACC, please visit their Facebook page, Adoptable Animals at DACC.

(My foster dad calls me “Korra”). I’m a happy, goofy, energetic, and cuddly girl. I always get compliments on how beautiful I am! Am I grey? Or am I brown? Who knows—all I know is I’m fabulous, especially in the sun.
I absolutely LOVE people (maybe too much as I tend to jump, but I’ve gotten better), but dogs have been a bit of a hit-or-miss with me. I haven’t been around cats.
I have learned so much since I got out of the shelter! I’m roughly four years old and had just about no training at all prior, and I am now housebroken, potty-trained, have learned “sit”, “lie down”, “stay”, “touch”, “shake”, “crate,” and I can wait for my food after you give me the “sit-stay” command, and then go to town after you tell me, “okay!”
I was afraid of the leash harness, and I will now happily sit and let you put it on me. However, I’m quite strong on the leash.
I was also afraid of the car, but my foster dad showed me it can take me to new places. I’ll go in, but the window being down scares me.
Crate training has been a work in progress, but I was also afraid of that initially. Now, I’ll happily go in one and chill out in there on my own accord. It’s just when you close the gate I start getting worried. Being alone took me some time to get used to, but I’ve gotten so much better at it! I’ve never destroyed anything out of anxiety—I just whine and…sometimes throw up from the anxiety. I’ve been left alone up to 10 hours without an accident, and the most damage I’ve done in the house is I throw the pillows and blanket off the couch.
My foster dad took me on this amazing journey to show me the world is an amazing place! I’m very smart and learn quickly, and with a good trainer and exercise I can be an even more amazing dog than I already am. If you want a fun, cuddly friend—I’m your girl.Flopsy

He has typical shepherd behavior; follows you everywhere, curious, at little mischievous, playful, and friendly to people.

Dog ReactiveFarley
70 lb., 5years old.
American Pit bull Terrier
Fostered Male, looking for a forever home
Farley loves very tenderly and seems to have the attention span for single person households. His foster Rowena would recommend families with older children that have experience being patient with animals. He is good with other dogs after slow introductions but no cats. He enjoys chasing balls and long walks as well as simply sleeping in and cuddling up to watch movies. He has a good relationship with her Corgi girl when shes relaxed and not jumping around.
Farley is very patient and walks either beside or behind. He sits and stays when asked with little distraction. With more focused training, Farley would succeed in any level of distraction. He is house trained with a consistent schedule and crate trained. He is fond of car rides and takes bathes well. When Rowena and Farley go on walks, he likes to look at birds.
Farley did have some separation anxiety at first when crated but with a consistent schedule and music he easily overcame it. Farley is ready for adoption with slow introductions!
Note: No interaction with cats or smaller kids is recommended.Biela

Gohan certainly has had it rough so far. Hes looking for a safe place to call home. Maybe one that he can have his human all to himself. He has some barrier reactivity here at the shelter and will need someone patient and willing to help him work on that and feel safe again. Hes been beat up and has a lot of scars and bite trauma. But hes a gentle boy who deserves to be spoiled rotten for the rest of his life! He loves treats and will sit nicely for them. He takes them gently too. Do you have a place in your heart and home for this deserving boy?

46 lb. spayed female, approx. 1 1/2 yrs old.
Pit Bull
This gal recently had a long shelter break and this is what weve learned:
Shes friendly and affectionate. She loves cuddles, kisses, and walks through the neighborhood. She is great with a 4 year old, and older kids outside. Unsure of younger children at this time. She is great with medium/big dogs (with proper introduction), but is unsure with smaller dogs. She stands well for bathing and nail trims. She is working on basic commands, and is very treat motivated. She does pull slightly on a leash, but that is easily fixed with her harness on. She is protective of her people, and will let you know the second someone is at the door. She is ready and waiting for her forever family!

Hello all! My name is Maxton
I have been loving my time with my foster family, but I am definitely ready to find my forever home
Im approximately 1 year old and I weigh 45 pounds. Im Heartworm Positive, so my new family will need to follow through with my scheduled injections / meds. I am a huge cuddle bug – personal space is something I am slowly learning. I just love being close to my humans. I LOVE other doggies & think I would do best in a home with at least one other dog. I am currently living with 2 dogs and I love to play and cuddle with them both. I am learning how to be a dog just by watching them, they give me great confidence as I am very shy. Id probably do best in a home without very small children because I get very excited (and clumsy) sometimes. I do very well with house visitors and get very excited to see everyone – Ill take in all the love and pets I can get!!!
Walking on a leash makes me very nervous, but I have gotten better each time When I walk with my foster siblings next to me, though, I dont get nervous at all! I have not met a cat, so I have no idea how I would react. I was super unsure of toys at first, but now I love emptying the toy bin and playing with all the toys at once OH, and I am REALLY good at tug-of-war!! I dont remember much from my past life, but I know it wasnt easy so, I need a family that is patient with me and willing to help me adjust to this new life.Delta

Unknown behavior with dogs/cats/kids.Sugar
A145772
43 lb. spayed female, approx. 11 yrs old
Sugar (Sugarbear as we call her) is a delightful 11-year old soul with a sharp mind and bum hips. She LOVES life and people. She is eager to be part of everything. Eager for walks, curious about dogs, cats, and anyone capable of giving attention. She needs to be loved and absolutely deserves it.
Her body holds her back right now, and she pays it little mind. She has severe arthritis in her hips and knees, which at the moment effectively renders her a tripod. As she recovers strength and health (incl. from kennel cough), she is regaining a little movement in her bum leg. She still wants to go for fast walks and she’s still strong enough to pull you along if needed! Physical therapy might help, plus joint supplements and pain meds. She will likely need a place with a ramp or no stairs to hop over in order to go potty, but she’s handling our 2 steps well so far. A house with mostly carpet/rugs would be beneficial for her to get around.
She’s potty trained on a schedule. Sugar is uninterested in toys, untrained in commands, and is reluctantly tolerant of bathtime. I suspect she isn’t crate trained; we haven’t used one except for car rides because it’s awkward for her to get in and out of. We’ve only left her alone once and she did great uncrated.
Once we slowly introduced our dog, and she realized dogs didn’t have to sleep in their own rooms, she absolutely refused to be separated from us! So now she sleeps in our room. She’s happy as long as she is fully welcomed and with the family.
She’s alert and mentally stellar. Once, she was sleeping by the couch, then shot up like a cannon and stood at the door for a full minute before the mail carrier appeared. She’d heard him a whole house away, even while resting.
She’s great with the kids and wishes my dog would play, but he’s an old curmudgeon. She loves to engage with any living thing around her, from animal to toddler, to big kid, to shelter staff (she seems to have been a volunteer favorite). She naps well and sleeps late in the morning. She adapts to our ‘small children family’ energy well but wishes we could go out more.
Sugar is looking for someone with a big stretchy heart who loves life. Someone who loves just sitting with a dog, who loves going for a walk just ’cause it’s sunny, and who will monitor her body as much as possible. This girl has had it rough and come out of it pure light and love, with some Velcro and clever stubbornness (it’s served her well so far!). She just wants you (and food!) and she just needs love back.
