Organizers say an indoor flea market featuring 50 vendors will take over the space adjoining the Detroit Mercantile Company this weekend. It's billed as "Not Your Grandma's Flea Market," so expect vendors that specialize in quirky wares, and not just the usual householder trying to unload everything in the attic and basement. This is the first time the event has been organized, and the people behind it hope it will become a popular event that happens more than once a year.
We spoke to one of the organizers, who goes by the name "TJ," and she told us there will be quality vendors selling art, antiques, rare vintage finds, handmade goods, and haberdashery. Admission is free and there will be live music, as well as food trucks outside. You might even come prepared to leave with a furry little friend, as Home Fur Ever pet adoption will be there to help orphaned animals connect with potential owners.
It all happens 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16, at 3434 Russell St., Detroit; for more information, email
