In 2017, the city of Detroit launched City Walls, a program that commissioned artists to beautify neighborhoods by creating elaborate murals all over the city.

Recently, the city celebrated its 100th mural, completed by Detroit artist, Waleed Johnson. Johnson hopes his painting, which depicts a woman donning a city of Detroit flag scarf, can be uplifting to all who see it.

“My hope is that anyone who drives by will see this image as uplifting,” Johnson said in a statement. “I also hope that the Black community of Detroit, in particular, will see themselves in the image and be reminded that they belong here.”

The City Walls can be found all over the city, we’ve put a few of them together here.
