Move over ice hockey, there's a new game in town: broomball.

OK, broomball is actually old, like over 100 years old. And while it is similar to hockey in that it is played on an ice rink, it employs brooms rather than sticks, and a grapefruit-sized ball instead of a puck. Rather than cumbersome ice skates, players just wear rubber-soled sneakers.

Much like hockey, the game is played with a goalie, three forwards, and two defensemen. Each team tries to get the ball into the 6-by-8-feet goals on either end of the rink.

The game will be played on The Rink at Campus Martius Park, according to a press release from the Downtown Detroit Partnership, which manages the city's parks and public spaces.

Now, not just anyone will be able to play broomball. An amateur league made up of teams from Quicken Loans, Meridian Health Plan, Ford Motor Company, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Plante Moran, Honigman, Ash & Erie, Kautex, and Green Lancer will play during an eight-week season, according to the DDP.

But, you can watch! Games will take place every Monday night from 6 to 10 p.m. through Feb. 28.

The Rink at Campus Martius is located at 800 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit. For more info go here.
