Eumelanin eumelanin.com Fashion brand Eumelanin’s namesake comes from the most abundant type of melanin in brown and black skin and hair. RocknRemix rocknremix.com Detroit native Charketa “Char” Glover was heavily influenced by her grandmother, a seamstress and fashion designer. Glover was a top four finalists in season 13 of Lifetime Network’s Project Runway and her designs have been worn by Tyra Banks, Angela Bassett, Michelle Williams, Niecy Nash, and other celebrities. Kevan Hall kevanhalldesigns.com Detroit-born Kevan Hall knew he wanted to become a fashion designer at the age of seven and in 1998 went on to become the Design and Creative Director at Halston in 1998. He launched his signature Kevan Hall Collection in 2002 to reflect “a fashion philosophy that emphasizes purity of style, incomparable tailoring and sensuously draped silhouettes, uncluttered by modern design.” Hall is a founder of Black Design Collective and his designs have been worn by celebrities including Salma Hayek, Sandra Oh, Ruby Dee, Gabourey Sidibe, and Michelle Obama. Anna Sui annasui.com Chinese-American fashion designer Anna Sui was born and raised in Detroit. In 2009, she received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and in 2010, she was named one of the “Top 5 Fashion Icons of the Decade” by TIME magazine. Maurice Malone mauricemaloneusa.com Maurice Malone built his career in the ’90s on urban and hip-hop fashion, helping to pave the way for fellow Black designers. He’s recognized as a top innovator in the denim industry, and his Detroit clothing store, The Hip Hop Shop, held open mic contests, where a young Eminem honed his chops by competing in rap battles. John Varvatos johnvarvatos.com A Detroit native who attended Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan, John varvatos first debuted his eponymous line in 2000. Before then, in the ’80s, he served as the head of menswear design at Polo Ralph Lauren, where he created Polo Jeans Co.; then, in the ’90s, Varvatos served as the head of menswear design at Calvin Klein, where he created boxer briefs. Detroit vs. Everybody vseverybody.com Detroit vs. Everybody was founded in 2012 by proud Detroit native Tommey Walker. The brand’s merchandise is all manufactured in Detroit and proceeds often go to local charitable causes, such as local small businesses hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic.
