Planned Parenthood of Michigan has launched a vasectomy pilot program in the state.

The nonprofit reproductive health care organization now offers vasectomy procedures in Grand Rapids, and says the program will expand throughout Michigan in 2026.

“We hear from a lot of our patients about wanting more control over their reproductive health or wanting to support their partners in preventing pregnancy and wishing they had more accessible options, so we are very excited to add vasectomy to the long list of sexual and reproductive health care services we offer,” Dr. Kate Starr, Planned Parenthood of Michigan’s chief medical officer, said in a statement. “We hope this new program can help fill some of the gaps in need and access and will keep fighting to break down barriers to care so that more Michiganders can control their bodies, their lives, and their futures.”

The pilot program launched at Planned Parenthood of Michigan’s Irwin/Martin Health Center, located at 425 Cherry St. SE, Grand Rapids.

It follows federal budget cuts from the Trump administration that led Planned Parenthood of Michigan to close clinics and cut staff in 2025, as well as other efforts to restrict abortion access nationwide.

“Despite the significant challenges of the last year, we have continued listening to the people we serve and looking for opportunities to expand their access to care in every way possible. This launch of vasectomy services in Grand Rapids is an important first step in providing more options for people seeking permanent birth control in Michigan,” Planned Parenthood of Michigan president and CEO Paula Thornton Greear said in a statement. “As the attacks on sexual and reproductive health continue to grow nationwide, our resolve only deepens. Everyone deserves the power to decide if, when, and how to grow their family, and our commitment to helping Michiganders exercise that right is unwavering.”

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating federal protections for the right to abortion. Later that year Michigan voters approved Proposal 3, which amended the state constitution to protect abortion rights here. Abortions remain illegal or restricted in many other states.

According to Planned Parenthood of Michigan, demand for vasectomies is on the rise in the U.S., growing by 26% from 2014 to 2021. After the Supreme Court decision, vasectomy rates increased nearly 60% in men under 30 years old, and 13% in single men, the organization says.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan says vasectomies are a safe and effective form of permanent birth control for men. Its clinics use a “no-scalpel” vasectomy technique that it says is less invasive, carries fewer risks, and offers a shorter recovery time than traditional vasectomies.
