Pastry House Hippo is one of our favorite metro Detroit pastry-makers, so it's with a heavy heart that we pass on the news that it served its final hot dog doughnut on Sunday.

The small Novi Japanese/French bakery made the announcement via its Facebook page, though it appears a new Japanese bakery will take its place.

What was the hot dog doughnut? Hippo offered two versions — one with meat encased in a soft, brioche-like, semi-sweet and sticky roll drizzled with a ketchup and mustard glaze. The other version is deep fried and more savory than sweet — not too far from a pasty.

Beyond the dogs, Hippos made adorable pastry turtles, pigs, crabs, and jolly-faced men filled with chocolate custard, strawberry pie filling, different varieties of sweet-ish bean paste and other sweets. On the savory side, it offered soba noodles sandwiches and brioche-like buns stuffed with ginger-y octopus salad.

We took photos of our favorite Hippo pastries. Find those here.

Here's the word from Hippo's page:

I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past 21 years. It's been a pleasure to serve you.
This location will be the future home of White Wolf Japanese Patisserie.
The owners are a young couple in who work in the restaurant/baking industry. Please welcome them.
Thank you again and I'm very sorry for the short notice.
