As Hanukkah celebrations kicked off in Detroit, people protested Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza. Just outside downtown Detroit’s annual Menorah in the D event, about two dozen people from Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now Detroit gathered and marched before they were ordered by police to keep moving. The protesters then held a menorah-lighting event of their own. Earlier in the afternoon, roughly 50 people gathered in the center of Wayne State University’s Gullen Mall for a short march to the Board of Governors meeting a few blocks north. Protesters made noise outside the meeting, then returned to their start point following a quick disruption outside of the WSU Starbucks. Students and protesters dispersed shortly after. No incidents were reported at either demonstration.

According to the Palestinian health minister, nearly 16,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the outbreak of war on Oct. 7, including many women and children.
