Detroit public transit advocates to discuss the State of the Region's Transit on Thursday

Following on the tail-end of a back-to-back offering of State of the State and State of the Union speeches this week, the Detroit-based nonprofit Transportation Riders United (TRU) will hold an event of its own this week. 

On Thursday, TRU will host an event inside Wayne State University's Law School Auditorium that focuses on where public transit in the region is currently headed. With M-1 Rail and the Southeast Michigan Regional Transit Authority becoming more relevant over time, there's plenty to discuss, Owens says.

The event will offer an "overview of what's happening in transit over the last year," Owens says. "And then we'll have a lot of information about public involvement and opportunities, and what future transit systems are going to be." 

One of the examples of how the public can get involved, TRU says, is with the RTA's 2015 effort to gather input on developing rapid transit services along Gratiot and Michigan Avenue. 

Doors for the event, which is free, open at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow. TRU will hold its annual business meeting at 6:30 p.m., then Owens and her colleague, Ruth Johnson, will deliver a presentation from 7-8 p.m.
