Atlanta punk outfit the Coathangers have no interest in playing nice. And why should they? Their sixth studio record, The Devil You Know, finds the all-female garage band confronting the tough shit like the weight of gun violence and addiction all while maintaining its hallmark house-party anthem aesthetic.
After taking a summer break, Julia Kugel-Montoya (Crook Kid Coathanger), Stephanie Luke (Rusty Coathanger), and Meredith Franco (Minnie Coathanger) regrouped to discover that they could no longer hang on to the shit that no longer served them — both as individuals and as a band. “Gotta arm yourself before they take your life/Gotta arm the teachers cuz the kids ain’t right/ Cuz you know war is just part of life,” the Coathangers protest on “F the NRA,” just one example of the record’s many moments of justifiable rage because, yeah. Fuck the NRA. Big Bite and Teener are also on the bill.
The Coathangers will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 at UFO Factory; 2110 Trumbull St., Detroit; facebook.com/ufofactorydetroit. Tickets are $17.
