The smashburger craze is coming to downtown Berkley with a new late-night spot.

Buns & Patties is set to open its doors on Friday, with opening hours as late as 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 1 a.m. from Sunday-Thursday.

Smashburgers have been having a moment in recent years. Made from ground beef patties pressed flat on a hot griddle until the edges are char and crisp, the burgers have found a real home in Detroit, from Kelly’s Bar in Hamtramck to Just Smash It, a local chain that counts Detroit rappers among its most loyal regulars.

Buns & Patties serves its signature BNP Smash Burger with two patties, American cheese, pickles, and a house sauce. Its menu also includes chicken sandwiches, a short rib grilled cheese sandwich, a vegetarian falafel burger, and breakfast sandwiches served all day.

The menu is rounded out with fries and custard sundaes.

“We wanted a menu you don’t have to overthink,” co-owner David Pinkhasov said in a statement. “It’s the food that people actually want — burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, sundaes — done right and ready whenever you need it.”

Pinkhasov is joined in the endeavor by his childhood friends Mark Isakov and Vlad Shamayev, who come with experience working in local restaurants.

“We’ve been talking about opening a place like this for years,” Isakov said. “Now it’s real. We’ve built a spot that people will want to come back to, especially late at night.”

“We’re thrilled to be opening, so we can finally show everyone what we’ve been working so hard on,” Shamayev added.

Buns & Patties is located at 2375 Coolidge Hwy. The space is 1,400 square feet and seats around 27 diners, featuring a mural by Detroit-based artist Jesse Kassel.
