Retail: Thrift on the Avenue

Thrift on the Avenue |

We've talked before about our love for the little strip on Cass near Wayne State University with its great little eateries and quirky little shops. They line the avenue, creating a walkable shopping district that beckons folks as far as the 'burbs to hit the streets for something that can't be found at Crate & Barrel or Urban Outfitters.

Thrift on the Avenue is one of those stores. It's occupied the building adjacent to Le Feria since February, and workers say they're doing fairly well in the new spot, although a dreadful winter did hinder their first few months there.

A musty old dungeon of forgotten T-shirts and culottes this is not. Rather, Thrift on the Avenue is a thoughtfully curated resale shop (not to be confused with vintage) that features a stock of gently used clothing in what can be best summed up as "the latest fashions." Pretty cocktail dresses, work-appropriate attire, and a selection of notable nighties make up the majority of Thrift on the Avenue's stock, along with trunks full of denim, a shelf of shoes, and a small selection of men's jeans and accessories.

Most of the store's stock comes from buying used clothing, which they do in-store every Tuesday and Thursday. Aside from that, the store's owners travel across the country collecting unwanted clothing from family members, the results of which can usually be found in a bargain bin that is strangely addicting.
