Techno pioneer K-Hand officially named ‘The First Lady of Detroit’ by city council

Techno artist Kelli Hand, aka K-Hand, has long been known as the "First Lady of Detroit techno." Now, she's officially the First Lady of Detroit.

Detroit city council honored Hand with a Testimonial Resolution certificate on Tuesday in a ceremony at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The certificate lists her many accomplishments in the male-dominated industry of electronic music, especially during the 1990s, including being the first woman to release house and techno records.

Ken Collier, who died in 1996, was also awarded a posthumous Testimonial Resolution. Additionally, DJs and producers Terrence Parker, Kyle Hall and Jay Daniel all received "Spirit Of Detroit" awards, as did Buy-Rite record store owner Cliff Thomas, in recognition of their “outstanding achievements or service to the citizens of Detroit.”
