Cannes. Sundance. Tribeca. These might be among the most recognizable names when it comes to film festivals, but Michigan has earned a place in the ranks of independent film havens.

Returning for its eighth year is the Cinetopia Film Festival, which will have done the heavy lifting by showcasing a handpicked program of the best of the best from global festivals. This year’s iteration will once again span 10 days and will feature more than 60 feature narrative and documentary films, as well as four shorts programs and more than 30 filmmakers from all over the world.
The fest, which will screen films and host events throughout Bloomfield Township, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Dearborn, will kick things off with the Michigan premiere of the eccentric dark comedy Before You Know It at the Michigan Theater. View the entire schedule here.

Opening night screening begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at the Michigan Theater; 603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor; 734-668-8397; cinetopiafestival.org. Individual tickets are $15, $50 movie passes are available for students, and full festival passes are $150-$200.
