Zach Curd (The Pop Project, Suburban Sprawl Records) used to be a bit of a hardcore punk. Now, as things happen, he’s a 33 year-old married dad. Instead of ignoring the cognitive dissonance, Curd decided to confront it head-on, reinterpreting choice cuts by acts of his youth like Black Flag, Negative Approach, and Minor Threat in a “SUPER DAD-LY” style.
“The source material for this project made up the soundtrack for mine and many peoples’ teenage years,” he says by email. “I thought it would be a fun project to revisit these songs and then reinterpret them as a 33-year-old married father. In the process of recording, the lyrics that I used as a springboard ended up really standing out, and it kind of turned into a nice little meditation on the direct-ness of hardcore punk.”
Curd adds, “These songs say ‘I hate you’ as clearly and as deeply as soul music says ‘I love you.'”
The tracklist includes “Police Story” by Black Flag, “Whatever I Do” by Negative Approach, “Victim In Pain” by Agnostic Front, and “Screaming At A Wall” by Minor Threat. Curd says any proceeds earned from this sonic experiment will be donated to Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
