Somewhere along the way, community theater unfairly became something of a punch line. It was probably the success of “Waiting for Guffman” that sent people giggling at the thought of a community theatrical production. But it’s not always that way. Royal Oak’s Stagecrafters regularly put on high-quality productions, and this month’s Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical should be no exception.
Part thriller, part musical, part love story, the production (which runs Jan. 9-Feb. 1) is the classic 1886 story, with an emphasis on the two, very different women who love different sides of the protagonist. Judging by the advance photos, the story will get a lush period staging, with plenty of gorgeous costumes.Â
Tomorrow’s show will be preceded by a 7 p.m. pre-glow with light snacks and beverages. Afterward, the play will run at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday. Advance tickets are $20 on Thursdays, $22 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Tickets may be purchased online at stagecrafters.org, by phone at 248-541-6430, or at the box office at the Baldwin Theatre, located at 415 S. Lafayette, Royal Oak.
