At the corner of Chene and East Warren, the Fireside Home Improvement store is, to say the least, in dire need of a healthy dose of home improvement. The brick building with attached flat was burned in a fire three years ago, and according to employees at a nearby appliance store, the owner of the building split town soon thereafter, leaving the building to become a haven for local vagrants.
Even with the piles of debris and collapsed walls, the structure, built in 1916, retains a certain je ne s’ai quoi. Remnants of a beautiful pressed-tin ceiling cling to parts of the scorched and water-damaged interior, and the painted red bricks remain vibrant, despite neglect.
