Happy 12/6 everyone! Welcome to the new Michigan marijuana holiday. A fitting date to usher in the holiday season.

I've smoked Moroccan hash in Morocco. I got high in Spain, France, Belgium, and Holland. I smoked spliffs in Jamaica, and got high atop of the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacan, Mexico. I got high in Guatemala and in Canada — my first country of international marijuana use.

In all of that smoking in all of those places none of it was ever legal. Shortly after 12 a.m. on 12/6 right here in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., I had my first legal smoke with bud grown right here in the Motor City. It felt good. It felt the same, but it still felt good to know that change has happened, and more change is coming. And I don't have to worry about going to jail for prudent marijuana use.

Enjoy your 12/6, and many happy returns.   Stay on top of Detroit news and views. Sign up for our weekly issue newsletter delivered each Wednesday.
