A new mural commemorating Motown great Stevie Wonder is well underway.

London-based artist Richard Wilson started the painting on Monday, Wonder's 69th birthday. 2019 also marks the 60th anniversary of Motown records.

According to a press release, Wilson approached the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts with the idea when he was in town last year for Eastern Market's Murals in the Markets festival, and offered to paint it on his own dime. The 100-foot-tall, 8,000-square-foot painting on the venue's south wall is expected to be completed within a week, weather permitting.

Once completed, a second mural commissioned by London-based nonprofit Education is Not a Crime will be created on the Music Hall’s west wall, depicting a boy standing in the interior of the Music Hall to raise awareness of the need for arts education in communities of color.

We'll share photos of the final mural with our readers once it's completed.
