  • You can catch Murals in the Market artists hard at work through Thursday, Sept. 20.

And they’re off. The fourth annual Murals in the Market — recently ranked one of the world’s top five mural festivals by Smithsonian magazine — kicked off last Wednesday, with more than 50 local and international muralists creating a brand new set of pieces throughout Eastern Market. This week, you can catch the artists at work between noon and 8 p.m. until Thursday.

Other Murals in the Market-related happenings include an exhibition featuring participating artists open from noon to 5 p.m. daily until Saturday at the MITM headquarters, located at 1550 Winder St. Detroit. From 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 you can catch Community Push’s pop-up skatepark, located behind Red Bull Arts Detroit at 1551 Winder St., Detroit. Then on Thursday evening, the MITM HQ will host a closing party with Ladymonix and Haylo from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. as part of Detroit Month of Design’s Eastern Market After Dark.

On Saturday, poets from high school collective Citywide Poets will recite original works in front of the new murals. The MITM HQ is also set to host an artist panel from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday featuring photographers Joshua Hanford, Marcus Thompson, Sam Sklar, and Justin Milhouse.

Murals in the Market runs through Sept. 22. The full schedule of events can be found at muralsinthemarket.com/events.
