Redford Theatre to screen '2001: A Space Odyssey' unrestored for film's anniversary

Fifty years ago, the incomparable Stanley Kubrick launched the sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey into the universe.

To celebrate its 50 revolutions around the sun, the Redford Theatre will screen the 1968 masterpiece in 70mm “unrestored” film print from original negative, just as Kubrick intended. Considered one of the most influential films of all time, the film follows Dr. Dave Bowman and his fellow astronauts as they embark on a mysterious mission when their ship’s computer, HAL, begins to exhibit odd behavior — resulting in a journey to preserve human evolution.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" will screen starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 through Saturday, Aug. 11 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12 at the historic Redford Theatre; 17360 Lahser Rd., Detroit; 313-537-2560;; Tickets are $10.
