June is pride month. But in Detroit, July is considered black gay pride month, and for more than 20 years, Hotter Than July has celebrated Detroit’s black gay community. That’s a lot of history, and tradition abounds: As in past years, this year's festivities include a candlelight vigil at the Blue Spruce Memorial Tree (from 6 p.m. to dusk on Tuesday), an opening party at the Woodward (6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday), a fine arts reception featuring LGBTQ artists at the Carr Center Gallery (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday), a big Palmer Park picnic (10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday), and, of course, brunch — this time held at the Charlevoix Gallery (noon to 3 p.m., Sunday).

Various venues; see for the full schedule; Some events are free and open to the public.
