Play dress-up at the DIA for a 'Star Wars' portrait on May 4

Posted By on Mon, Apr 30, 2018 at 11:35 AM

"Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice," says everyone's favorite green guru Yoda in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. But when it comes to the Star Wars universe at large, there are hundreds of characters. (And no, Jar Jar Binks doesn't count because he's an abomination to the saga and the art of screenwriting and can we please just forget he exists?)

To honor May 4 (Intergalactic Star Wars Day... May the Fourth be with you, get it?) and the upcoming exhibit Star Wars and The Power of Costume the Detroit Institute of Arts invites Star Wars fans from both sides of the galaxy to partake in a group photo of galactic proportions.

Come dressed as your best Sith (is there such a thing?) or groom your body hair for a realistic Chewbacca and stand with your fellow force-wielding freaks to honor the legendary franchise and fandom. The photo will take place at 6:20 p.m. on the steps of the DIA on Woodward Ave. The first 200 fans will be given tickets to the Star Wars and The Power of Costume exhibition and all fans are invited to peruse the museum which will remain open until 10 p.m.

It should be noted that costumes are encouraged for the photo but all masks, lightsabers, and weaponry are not permitted inside the museum. Also, to protect the artwork, full face paint is prohibited. A little glitz, glam, and gore on the cheek or around an eye is welcome.

Star Wars and The Power of Costume
will display original garb from the first seven films from May 20 through Sept. 30. Queen Amidala, Yoda, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, Han Solo, X-wing pilots, and droids, including C-3PO and R2-D2 are among the 60 featured costumes.

Star Wars and The Power of Costume will be on view at the DIA starting May 20 and will run until September 30; 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-833-7900; dia.org; Tickets are available here.
