The Joe Louis monument will get a little face lift tomorrow

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 2:37 PM

Detroit's iconic statue affectionately known as "The Fist" will get a little face lift tomorrow afternoon. According to a press release sent out by the Detroit Institute of Arts, the statue's hanging cables will be replaced, some minor structural work will be done, and it will undergo a surface cleaning. This sort of maintenance happens once a decade for the monument.

The statue was originally dedicated on October 16, 1986, which means it will turn 29 this fall. It was commissioned by Sports Illustrated and gifted to the city of Detroit in honor of the Detroit Institute of Arts' 100th birthday. Robert Graham sculpted "the Fist."

The routine maintenance is planned to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, June 24.
