Why our Opening Day issue cover might look familiar

Posted By on Wed, Apr 1, 2015 at 7:02 AM

Contemporary art buffs will probably recognize that's not just a majestically goofy illustration of Miguel Cabrera riding on a tiger on the cover our Opening Day issue, on newsstands today.

The image spoofs fine artist Kehinde Wiley's iconoclastic "Officer of the Hussars," an oil painting that you may have spotted in the background of Fox's hit TV show, Empire — or more locally, currently on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The illustration was created for MT by local artist Ryan Wheeler (no, not the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim third baseman of the same name).

If you don't know about Wiley's paintings, you can learn more over at Arts.black in a recent post by Detroit art critic Taylor Aldridge. Read more about the art of Empire here.
