Series features progressive film and food with Latin flair

Latin American cinema and Latin American food come together the first and third Wednesday of each month in the free Progressive Latin American Cinema Series at Las Brisas Restaurant.

The series, now in its second season, is coordinated by Bill Meyers (arguably the most visible link in Detroit between the music world and the world of progressive politics, and a columnist for Progressive Cinema) and Ozzie Rivera (whose own multiple roles include leading Orquesta La Inspiracion, in which Meyers is musical director and pianist). The films address Latin America and the lives of Latin Americans in the United States. The idea is that the first film of the month addresses political issues, while the third Wednesdays are more culturally oriented. (The film are all in English, or in Spanish with English subtitles.)

For instance, on Wednesday, July 6, the series presents Lisanka, a 2010 film directed by Daniel Diaz Torres. The film is described as “The history of the Cuban missile crisis and the birth of the Cuban Revolution told as a comic allegory. Three men court the lovely tractor driver, Lisanka, a young Cuban revolutionary, an anti-government business owner and Soviet soldier, with backdrop of the early ’60s.”

The July 20 film is Chucho Valdes  & Irakere, about the great and popular Cuban band whose members include co-founder and pianist Valdes of the title, and (now) jazz-star expatriates Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. Ozzie Rivera co-hosts this presentation.

Next month’s films are Lula, Son of Brazil, a 2009 doc about the country’s (now) former, progressive president (August 3), and Crossover Dreams, a 1985 feature film starring musician-actor Ruben Blades as a salsa singer who will do anything to get to the top (August 17, with Rivera co-hosting again.)

Films are presented at 6:30 p.m., food and drinks are available, and the films are free (though donations are encouraged). La Brisas is at 8445 W. Vernor, near Lawndale; lasbrisasindetroit.com. More info about the film series at 313-207-3904.
