The Hastings Street Blues Band

Posted By on Wed, May 12, 1999 at 12:00 AM

Led by drummer Bobby White, Hastings Street is one of the few-if not the only-all-black Detroit blues band consisting of members without one foot in the grave. Considering the African-American roots of blues-and Detroit's predominantly African-American population-this is rather significant. But don't just go to see the band for that reason alone. These guys are good, and they have a lot of fun at the same time. Consequently, the audience becomes infected with the blues-is-a-party spirit these guys invoke so well. Pay particular attention to Cookie, the vocalist, and Paul, the guitar player. The rest of the band is quite good, but these two are great.
