A sneak peek at Bacon Bash's offerings

Posted By on Fri, Apr 17, 2015 at 12:46 PM

The offerings at tonight's Bacon Bash in Royal Oak look absolutely lip-smacking. From savory bacon dishes to sweets, fans of the "meat candy" are in for a real treat this evening. Some sounded so interesting we had to investigate more.

For instance, take the offering of Warren's Motor City Meatball Kitchen: A "Bacon Meatball Mac n’ Cheese" and a "Bacon-Potato Soup." Co-owner Ron Uhouse tells us, "It's a bacon-infused mac and cheese. In the cheese sauce, we use bacon fat instead of butter. There are also chunks of bacon through the mac and cheese. It's all topped with a bacon meatball, which is bacon mixed with pork. And it's going to be topped with a bacon crème fraîche made of whole milk and a little bacon fat."

Motor City Meatball Kitchen is also offering a sweet potato curried lentil soup with a bacon crumble on top. Uhouse told us, "It's like a bisque, and it’s very tasty. You have to try it tonight!"

The good people at Grand Illusions, a wedding and catering company, are offering "50/50 Sliders," which are, of course, half bacon and half beef, with bacon on top. But they'll also have "Bacon-Potato Bombs," which the company's Chris Franchi calls "basically a chunk of cheese wrapped in mashed potatoes wrapped in bacon and deep-fried."

One of the most interesting offerings is from Little Z's Barbecue in Saint Clair Shores. It's called “Z’s Chocolate Dipped Hog Finger." Little Z's Steve Zaremba says they have a small waffle mold that makes finger-sized waffles. So they took candied applewood-smoked bacon and shredded it and mixed it into the batter. Then they make the waffles, dip half in chocolate, and garnish it with a bit of what Zaremba calls "pig candy dust." "It’s a little rich," he says, "but it’s very tasty. It kind of balances out flavor of bacon a little bit with the sweet."

He finally laughs and adds, "and everybody loves chocolate!"
