Fancy breakfasts

Toast has taken over Delia’s space in Ferndale, bringing a new decor and layout. The food is marvelous, plus beautiful to look at. Weekday egg-fests include some pretty fancy fixin’s along with more regular fare, and it gets more lavish on the weekend. Try the wild mushroom or French omelets, breakfast burrito or corned beef hash. The French toast layers challah with bananas and adds rum and vanilla, topped with a raspberry-blueberry sauce ... large and luscious.

Tamed flames

Feeding its Livonia neighborhood for more than 10 years, this is a busy little place, but the staff is friendly and attentive. Authenticity has been subjugated to American tastes; fiery Szechuan specialties are toned down and interspersed with milder Cantonese entrées. Best bets include the Mandarin crispy duck and that old standby, moo goo gai pan (slabs of chicken breast sautéed with snow peas, bamboo shoots and mushrooms in a simple white sauce).

Mangia, mangia

Thousands of people love this place, a fast-growing chain that attempts to re-create the Southern Italian immigrant experience of the 1950s. The surprising thing is that the food is really good — not to mention cheap. The corporate mission is to take diners back to the ’50s, when families were large and the meatballs were too. The marinara is pleasingly chunky with tomatoes; the Caesar salad actually includes anchovies. Tiramisu is dense and superior, and the wine list includes Chianti in a basket.
