Watch: Detroit! Drones! Clichéd comparisons to Chernobyl!

May 15, 2015 at 2:35 pm

"Who knew that parts of Detroit look like abandoned towns left to rot after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in Pripyat, Ukraine?" asks a writer over at Esquire, who apparently has never seen a photo of Detroit before. The sentiment was echoed by Esquire's social media editor, who wrote "Incredibly, parts of Detroit look like the aftermath of Chernobyl." (Nevermind that the teaser photo they used is not Detroit but the unfinished Satsop Nuclear Power Plant in Washington).

The posts link to a gallery of photos compiled from a Mic compilation of drone footage (with the Millennial-as-fuck headline "People Flew These Drones Over Ghost Towns — And the Results Are Haunting"). The author notes that the shots from Detroit "look more like an extension of the Chernobyl footage from earlier."

Incredibly, parts of Detroit look like the aftermath of Chernobyl.

To answer the question posed by Esquire — like, everybody? People have been making Detroit-Chernobyl comparisons before drone footage-mania swept the nation. In fact, Google search guessed we were looking for "detroit looks like chernobyl" before we even finished typing it.

Anyway, check out the footage below.
