They've come here from New York or the Baltimore suburbs or New Orleans. Maybe they started here and have circled back slowly by way of Australia and other far-flung points. Or maybe they're biding time in Paris, anxious to join what they see as a new emerging Detroit. They're bringing energy, vitality. They're bringing fresh eyes, keener to see the city's possibilities and opportunities than to dwell on the pain of its past. They're working the trenches or, like Toby Barlow, becoming prominent advocates for the city in the national media. How they'll change the narrative of the city, how they'll relate to its past and longstanding institutions, remains to be seen. But in this edition of our annual Fall Arts Issue, we'll introduce you to a handful of these transplants and some ideas about what might be ahead.
