Sunday is International Women's Day

Yes, International Women's Day is a thing. Actually, in countries like Afghanistan, China, Cuba, Madagascar, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Zambia it's considered a national holiday and the first International Women's Day was held in 1911. Crazy, right?

The March 8 holiday, as one might assume, celebrates the many miracles, large and small, that women perform each day. From caring for children and family to heading multi-million dollar companies, girls really do run the world.
The holiday, which coincides with March's Women's History Month, asks people to celebrate the women in their life who inspire them, generally by sharing a purple flower with them. Mothers, grandmothers, teachers, friends, and co-workers are all worthy recipients of a special lavender bloom.

To celebrate, the organization behind IWD holds events around the world. Right here at home, Detroit's Socra Tea plans to hold their third annual Women's Day tea. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Sunday and will include sushi, tea, networking, and shopping from local female-owned businesses, according to a flier, and is the only official IWD event in Michigan.
