The post-Montreux Detroit International Jazz Festival (aka the Nontreux Festival), officially known as the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival, has a marquee crowded with big names for the Labor Day weekend. But there are names of note, too, who aren’t up in lights. For instance, trumpeter Ryan Kisor and saxophonist Steve Wilson perform with pianist Michael Weiss; pianist Stephen Scott and bassist Buster Williams will be with trombonist (and conch shell virtuoso) Steve Turre; the JazzTimes Superband boasts trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Bob Berg, organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Dennis Chambers. Meanwhile, the Mingus Big Band includes such heavy-hitters as trumpeter Eddie Henderson and a saxophone section of Vincent Herring, Mark Shim, John Stubblefield, Alex Foster and Gary Smulyan.
