Smith up, Loftus rises

We have some good news here at Metro Times.

Close readers noticed some of it last week with the change of Brian Smith's title in our masthead. Since becoming MT's music editor, Brian has re-emphasized the sounds of this city as central to what happens here — in terms of both tragedy and triumphs, as a reflection of the best of what can be and the worst of what is. That was all the clearer for us this week as Brian coordinated our coverage in the wake of the after-hours club shooting that left hip-hop star Proof dead, another man in critical condition, and myriad questions that freelancers Khary Kimani Turner and Jonathan Cunningham try to sort out.

In his new title as features editor, Brian, who came to us four years ago after an award-winning stint at Phoenix New Times, will be working with me to guide all of our non-news sections, from culture to films to our listings section. He'll continue to write about music as well, but as part of a wider world of topics.

Meanwhile, Johnny Loftus, a frequent music freelancer, becomes our music editor this week. Johnny was a staff writer at All Music Guide, and wrote for Pitchfork as well as some of the better alternative weeklies around the country. That he's passionate about an eclectic array of music goes without saying. He'll be working closely with Brian in the coming transitional weeks.

We're looking forward to great things here at Metro Times. You can too. —W. Kim Heron, editor
