Slate takes a look at
a beautiful set of photos today from Michigan native Clare Benson. Her series called "The Shephard's Daughter" is, as writer Jordan Teicher puts it, "her way of discovering a tradition that, in many ways, is her heritage, but, in other ways, still remains a mystery."
Teicher says Benson grew up in Drummond Island, an Upper Peninsula community located in Chippewa County. "Though she learned to shoot a bow and arrow as a child, her father never took her hunting," Teicher writes.
Benson got the idea for her series while working on a separate project about her mother.
“I was reflecting on these memories of her getting sick and trying to get to know her as an adult with only these memories from childhood,” Benson told Teicher. “At a certain point, somebody asked me, ‘If you weren't making work about your mother, what would you make work about?’ I immediately said, ‘My father.’ So I started looking at his life and his past.”
